Stress Corrosion Cracking could be next"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>It is out there, lurking in the climbing places you enjoy most, the places where you feel safest. <strong>Stress corrosion cracking strikes in broad daylight<\/strong>, it cannot be seen and its attacks cannot be predicted. <strong>But there is hope, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theuiaa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UIAA<\/a> has tips to dodge it. Check them out!<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>QUICK FACTS<\/h2>\n<p>Recent incidents indicate <strong>unexpected failures of climbing anchors<\/strong> under low loads and <strong>after only some months or years in place<\/strong>. These failures occurring mostly on <strong>stainless (!) steel anchors are due to environmental degradation<\/strong>, i.e. corrosion and more specifically <strong>stress corrosion cracking<\/strong> (SCC).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1435 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mountainow-blog.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/kalymnos_bad_bolt_03-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>In worst cases, anchors c<strong>an break under only a few tens of kilograms<\/strong> \u2013 less than the climber weight<\/li>\n<li>Usually along seasides but <strong>can be some km away from the coast<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Corrosion is not always visible. Could be <strong>invisible cracks<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Stress corrosion cracking, which is the most virulent, could initiate cracks <strong>very rapidly after anchor installation<\/strong>. Within some weeks maybe, a few months for sure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>All stainless steels<\/strong>, even the 316L grade, are concerned<\/li>\n<li>The UIAA Safety Commission is working on finding anchors with material suitable for these environments<\/li>\n<li><strong>All material<\/strong> in place shall be considered as <strong>potentially affected<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>MOST CRITICAL FACTORS<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>\u201cModerate\u201d relative humidity<\/strong> location (very dry is OK, and very humid also, in between is a problem);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Area NOT washed by rain<\/strong> (even washed by the sea can be OK!!);<\/li>\n<li>Temperature is not critical, SCC can occur at 20\u00b0C, but higher temperatures are worse;<\/li>\n<li>Rock types: <strong>limestone\/dolomite is generally worse<\/strong> than sandstone or granite (<strong>karst is the worst case<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1434 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mountainow-blog.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/kalymnos_bad_bolt_02-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has been confirmed as the <strong>cause of a number of recent climbing anchor (bolt) failures<\/strong> and is further suspected in many more incidents.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Small differences in microclimate can lead to <strong>SCC degradation for some bolts<\/strong>, while other bolts on the same climb are unaffected. SCC is associated with seaside climbing but <strong>can also occur in inland areas where corrosive elements are present<\/strong>, either naturally occurring in the rock itself or deposited inland by sea breezes.<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Locations where stress corrosion cracking has been confirmed or is highly suspected:<\/span> <\/strong><strong>Thailand; Greece; Taiwan; Italy; Dominican Republic; Malta; Cayman Brac; Minorca; Hawaii; Morocco; Madagascar; Portugal; Sardinia; <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8230; there are probably many more, so stay cautious !<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW AS A CLIMBER<\/h2>\n<p>Only destructive testing can confirm the presence\/absence of SCC on installed anchors. It is <strong>not possible to visually assess or even to casually test (like to pull on them) the effective strength of the anchors in place<\/strong>. Even anchors that have been installed in recent months and\/or <strong>look brand new could be compromised<\/strong> by SCC or some forms of corrosion.<\/p>\n<p>Tests done by a Petzl France on all bolts of an example cliff show that 20% of the installed anchors had a strength between1 and 5 kN and thus would barely sustain body weight, let alone the mildest of fall arrests. Such conditions lead to <strong>incidents<\/strong> like the one that occurred in Sicily: <strong>during rappelling, the lower bolt of the belay broke under only the body weight of the climber<\/strong> (65 kg); fortunately the upper bolt held and the three climbers were unharmed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1433 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mountainow-blog.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/consigli-per-arr\u2026arsi-sulle-rocce-800x480-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"677\" height=\"406\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>Recommendations for climbers<\/h3>\n<h4>When planning a trip<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider SCC when assessing the risk of climbing at a proposed climbing destination<\/li>\n<li>Check with local climbers and\/or climbing organizations regarding the prevalence of SCC and the corrosion resistance of local bolts<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared for the presence of SCC, especially at hot, seaside, limestone\/dolomitic destinations (Karst is the most aggressive rock)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>When climbing<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider SCC when assessing the risk of climbing a given route.<\/li>\n<li>Belay\/lower from redundant, multi-bolt anchors<\/li>\n<li>Back up bolts and belay\/rappel stances with nuts, camming devices, trees, and\/or threaded hourglasses<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared to abandon projects with suspect bolts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>In the event of bolt failure (once the climbers are safe and possible injuries have been attended to)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Collect the failed anchor parts; avoid disturbing the failure surface or trying to piece together the failed anchor.<\/li>\n<li>Inform the local climbing community. Post an observation on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountainow.net\/en\/\">MountaiNow<\/a> (via app or web) to geo-localize the failure and inform the whole community in real-time.<\/li>\n<li>Contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theuiaa.org\/home\/submit-examples-of-climbing-anchor-corrosion\/\">UIAA<\/a> and make the failed anchor parts available to the UIAA or one of its national federations for analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Drawn from UIAA &#8220;Watch you anchor!
